Autumn is one of the most important times of the year to make a change.

The lighter, easier days of summer disappear, routines return and, for many people, anxiety begins to rise. Then comes the long run towards Christmas: darker evenings, more social occasions, more opportunities to drink, more money being spent and more pressure to appear cheerful while privately feeling anything but.

It is remarkably easy to decide that January will be the time to sort things out.

We would suggest something different.

If alcohol has gradually become your way of switching off, coping with anxiety, managing a difficult relationship, surviving work or simply getting through the evening, another four months of it is unlikely to make January easier.

At Harrogate Sanctuary, we don't just concentrate on taking alcohol away. We work intensively with what is happening around it.

That might mean anxiety that has quietly taken over your thinking. A marriage or relationship under strain. Difficult family dynamics. Problems at work. Menopause and the emotional and physical changes surrounding it. Loss of confidence. Poor sleep. Isolation. Anger. Bereavement. Or simply reaching the point where you no longer recognise the life you are living.

For some clients, six weeks of intensive work is enough to create substantial change. For others, particularly where family, relationships, business pressures or longstanding patterns are involved, we work together over several months.

The important distinction is that you are not expected to put your life on hold in order to get well.

Our programmes take place within your real life. We help you deal with situations as they actually happen, rather than removing you from them and hoping that everything will somehow be different when you return.

That is also why our support is deliberately personal and intensive. There is an enormous difference between talking about a difficult week retrospectively and having therapeutic support while you are actually navigating it.

More Than Stopping Drinking

Getting well should ultimately give you something back.

Clearer thinking. Better sleep. Less anxiety. More confidence. Improved relationships. Greater control over your finances and decisions. Time that isn't organised around drinking or recovering from it. And, very often, the discovery that life can become considerably bigger once alcohol occupies less of it.

We also work extensively with families.

Sometimes the person who contacts us isn't the person drinking. Living alongside somebody else's alcohol misuse can create its own cycle of anxiety, monitoring, rescuing, arguing and trying to control the uncontrollable. Our longer term programmes can help families untangle these patterns without blame and establish healthier relationships and boundaries.

Availability From October 2026

We currently have limited availability for new programmes beginning from October onwards.

For anyone already wondering whether their drinking, anxiety or coping mechanisms have become a problem, you don't need to wait until things become catastrophic before asking for help.

And you certainly don't need to wait for January.

Harrogate Sanctuary remains deliberately discreet. There are no group sessions, no public declarations and no requirement to disappear into residential treatment. Our work is private, individual and built around the person in front of us.

We have been doing this work since 2010. We don't rely on slogans, social media performance or one-size-fits-all solutions. We rely on experience, clinical expertise and a considerable amount of individual work with every client.

New enquiries, including enquiries from family members, are handled personally and confidentially by Sarah Turner.

If you would like to know whether we could help, please use our contact form to tell us a little about what is happening.
